What We Teach

Teens Teach focuses its tutoring on preparing students for the German proficiency examinations required by the Austrian government. This involves working on grammar, reading, and writing aptitude from levels A1 through B2, as well as conversation for the oral portions of the tests. Teachers therefore prepare exercises and lessons based on real examinations, mimicking and adapting the skills necessary to move to the next level.

The Teens Teach summer course is broken up into nine weeks, with a particular theme assigned to each week. Themes range from such common topics as “Introductions” and “The Household” to more specific topics like “Austrian History.” The complexity of each topic will, of course, have to be adjusted to the German level of the students in each group. Those students already learning at a B2 level will deal with different material than those learning at an A1 level, but all within the same theme.

How We Teach

The Teens Teach Initiative is run entirely by students - from management to tech to teachers. We strongly believe in the freedom of choice and the expertise of our teachers. So while the course provides general guidelines for the weekly program, we give our teachers a lot of independence in shaping their lessons to match the individual needs of their group. As a result, the course is not only more adaptable to our students, but also makes it more enjoyable for our volunteers!

Each teacher is assigned to a small group of three to four students. The teacher prepares for each day of the week a lesson that consists of reading, text analysis, writing, grammar, and conversation exercises and that fits the theme of the week (THEME OF THE WEEK). The teaching style is decided by the teacher and the student group, but many groups use the Teens Teach suggested teaching style (TEACHING STYLE).
